Shelly Caldwell is glad to have a home near the school in a beautiful setting in Alsea, but she's worried about the cost of heating a home with no insulation and cracks in the walls.  Even worse is the threat of a foreclosure notice that might be served the day after Christmas.  The broken doors and a heating until held together with tape behind her add to her worries.
