A truck carrying a two trailers of hay caught on fire traveling northbound on Highway 99 south of Airport Road on Tuesday morning. Local farmers responded to put out the fire but smoke continued to billow from the hay as it smoldered and the road will remained closed as crews try to clean up.

Local farmers, residents and members of the Monroe Fire Department keep a steady flow of water on smoldering hay after tractor-trailer carrying hay caught on fire while traveling north on Highway 99W south of Airport Road about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday . Local farmers and residents responded to the fire and put it out but the road was closed until 1:30 p.m.

The semi, carrying a tower from Eugene to Idaho, was routed through Corvallis because it is too tall for I-5, but it tore out the sign pole while making a right-hand turn from Harrison Boulevard to 3rd Street.  ODOT crews were called in to manage the pole and the cables within it.
